A Reminder to Apply for EU Settled Status as the Deadline is 30 June

The deadline to apply for EU settled status is quickly approaching, so if you have not yet applied for the settlement scheme, now is the time to do so. The deadline for all applications will be the 30th of June 2021. All EU, EEA and Swiss citizens who arrived in the UK before the end of 2020 can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme for the right to remain.

Although it is unclear what will happen to people who do not apply to the settlement scheme by 30 June, one thing that is certain, is that without the legal right to work in the UK businesses will not be able to employ anyone without proof of settled status.

What are the different types of worker?

There are three different statuses employers need to make themselves aware of:

1. Settled status

Employees are required to have been in the UK for five years in a row (or defined as six continuous months in any one year period for five concurrent years) for them to be granted settled status. Once they are successful, employees can then remain in the UK.

2. Pre-settled status

Those who arrived in the UK before the end of 2020 but fail to meet the five-year requirement may be granted pre-settled status. If they are successful, they will be able to keep living and working in the UK for five years. After this period, they can then apply for settled status.

3. Indefinite right to remain

Employees who already have an indefinite right to remain can continue to live and work in the UK as before.
