The Living Wage Foundation

If you’ve ever looked for jobs online, you’ve probably come across companies noting that they pay the Real Living Wage. While everyone knows what the minimum wage set out by the government is, what exactly is the Real Living Wage and how is it different? This article will explore the real living wage and why Total Support Services (TSS) are proud to be a recognised service provider. Keep reading on to find out more.

The Living Wage Foundation

The Living Wage Foundation works with voluntary companies to impose a real living wage. The Real Living Wage is a set wage rate in the UK that is paid by nearly 10,000 businesses who believe their staff are entitled to a wage that meets their cost-of-living needs.

As it stands, the National Living Wage (for over 23s) is £9.50. This only covers people over the age of 23 and has no London weighting, despite the cost of living being exponentially higher in the city. This wage does not consider what employees need to live. The National Living Wage acts as a percentage of median earnings and is often criticised by people as being unliveable.

The Real Living Wage (as set out by the Living Wage Foundation) has been set according to how much money people need to live. This rate is £9.90 across the UK and £11.05 in London. It is voluntary and covers people over the age of 18.

Why Should Businesses Pay The Real Living Wage

According to the Living Wage Foundation, 93% of living wage businesses have benefitted since becoming accredited. Being a company that publicly chooses to treat its employees well improves the company’s overall reputation, helps attract and retain top talent and improves relationships between managers and employees.

With the cost of living being higher than ever, companies who choose to pay the Real Living Wage tell their employees that they value their lives. They know that hard work should be rewarded and work hard to support their employees and their goals.
